Modest and no-touch posing
Agree on touch before the day
Some couples are comfortable holding hands after the nikah, others prefer no touch at all in public. Tell your photographer in advance so poses are planned, not improvised in front of family.
Connection without contact
Walking side by side, a shared look, foreheads almost touching, or framing the couple through a doorway all read as intimate without physical contact.
Hijab and dupatta details
Ask for a few frames that show the fabric, pins and embroidery. A second shooter or a quick check between shots keeps hijabs and dupattas neat in wind.
Family-first group photos
Make a short shot list of family groupings, including separate men's and women's groups if your family prefers, so group photos move quickly after the ceremony.
Civil ceremony and nikah FAQ
Do we need a civil ceremony if we have a nikah?
A nikah on its own is only legally registered in Ontario if the imam is authorized to solemnize marriages and you have a marriage licence. Otherwise, many couples add a short civil ceremony at city hall to make the marriage legal.
Should the nikah happen before or after the city hall ceremony?
Either works. Some families hold the nikah first so the couple is religiously married before appearing together in public photos; others do city hall first on a weekday and the nikah with the wider family on the weekend.
Can we get married at Toronto City Hall?
The City of Toronto's civil wedding pilot runs at Old City Hall and the North York Civic Centre rather than the current City Hall at 100 Queen St W. Nathan Phillips Square outside City Hall is still a popular portrait spot.
How long should photo coverage be for a city hall wedding?
Around two hours covers the ceremony plus portraits nearby. If the nikah or a family dinner is the same day, a half-day package usually covers both.
